Beat Tiredness With Rosemary Essential Oil

Now that the clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in and even here on the normally sun-drenched Channel Island of Jersey it’s definitely beginning to get chilly, many of us really find it difficult to stay awake.

The combination of dark evenings and the temptation to curl up on the sofa in front of the fireplace is nothing if not soporific. But what if you actually need to stay awake past 8 pm and really need to get through the day’s meetings without extreme yawning? Rather than resorting to umpteen cups of coffee or a trip to the chemist for a packet of apparent energy-giving pills, why not let Mother Nature give you that helping hand? How about trying a drop or two of our lovely rosemary essential oil?

Rosemary essential oil acts to stimulate the brain and central nervous system and so simply inhaling the vapour of rosemary essential oil can help to keep you feeling awake and active. Rosemary has been recorded being used as far back as in Ancient Greece when scholars would wear wreaths of rosemary on their heads when taking exams to help them concentrate and aid them in recalling information.

These days rosemary is being investigated for its chemical action on the brain. It is thought that certain phytochemicals present in rosemary can help to prevent the degradation of acetylcholine, which is a chemical found in the brain and is vital for the functioning of normal neurotransmission. A deficiency of this chemical is commonly seen in Alzheimer’s patients and so it is possible that future Alzheimer’s drugs may be based on rosemary.

So now that you’ve got your lovely bottle of rosemary essential oil, what should you do with it to help to keep you awake? There are a number of simple steps that could have an amazing effect, so why not try:

– Adding a drop of rosemary oil to your shampoo for a great morning boost. Not only will this get you positively springing out of the shower, but rosemary oil is also great for treating dandruff and leaving you with lustrous shiny hair. Win-win really!

– Pop a couple of drops of rosemary oil onto a cotton wool ball or something else absorbent and tuck it into your car’s heater vents. The warm air will release the vapours from the rosemary oil and keep you alert and invigorated during the daily commute.

– Mix 5 drops of rosemary oil into 5ml of carrier oil and apply this to your temples or other pulse points. This will immediately invigorate your senses and when massaged into the temples can be a great way to relieve headaches.
